Competition, 1st prize
In collaboration with JDMA and LandinzichtBrussels, 2018 - … (ongoing)

The competition brief asked for a pedestrian, cyclist and wheelchair-accessible connection between the monumental art nouveau “Pont du Jubilé” and the new Tour &#38;amp; Taxis park 9m below it. The winning proposal would replace a temporary scaffolding structure which had fulfilled this role for the last three years, since the opening of the park.
After a site visit and a critical analysis of the brief we concluded that this connection could be easily realised with a slight adaption of the existing park terrain. The available budget for the project, which was estimated for a punctual architectural intervention, became available for a more extensive series of landscape interventions, with the purpose of finalizing the more or less accidental park layout. Remaining in line with the material vocabulary of the other sections of the park (gravel paths, stairs in recuperated blue stone) a series of lateral shortcuts are superimposed on the park’s existing longitudonal path system, crossing the park’s valley-like section (actually the ancient railway trench leading to the Tour &#38;amp; Taxis warehouses).

Additional pedestrian accesses, one in each corner of the bridge, make for a consistent and meaningful connection between the park with the urban fabric. A couple of generous steel stair with blue stone steps and a pronounced lanterns — referring to the supposed existing lanterns which once crowned the pillars of the existing birdge — are the only architectural elements of the project, and are implemented to bridge the major height differences between neighbourhood and park.

The entire design is an exercise in modesty and an economy of means, where the available resources are put to maximum effect.

Home Office
Ostend, BE / 2019 - ... / with Michael Langeder&#38;nbsp;The ground floor of an inconspicious row house in the outskirts of Ostend is transformed to a multifunctional open space, to be used as home office of the owner couple, a record label owner and a graphic designer, and as a guest room. To achieve this mixed program in such a small area (45 m2), the structure of the ground floor is removed completely, and replaced by cross of beams supported by a single column. The columns doubles as the hinge for a revolving cupboard for 10,000 records, which functions as a flexible room divider. The rest of the furnishings are fixed and loose elements, designed to be as functional as possible, and house all the technical equipment present on the floor.

A continuous cast floor finish ‘spills’ out into the front and back garden, visually extending the interior space and allowing functions to extend to the outside when the weather allows. Holes in the floor house plants, both exterior and interior. A sculptural polished concrete mass, with the building waste as granulates, functions as a podium and exterior fire place.

Apartment refurbishment
Brussels, BE / 2016-2017
This small apartment occupies one floor in a 19th century mansion in the centre of Brussels. As a first step in its refurbishment, all non-load-bearing elements and lowered ceilings were removed, revealing beautifully molded ceilings in the almost 4m high spaces. Secondly, the separating wall between kitchen and living room is removed. The resulting opening is spanned by a simple custom-made truss, which compared to a typical I-beam for the same span is lighter, and possible to place without hoisting machinery. Finally, in order to make the most of the available space, all technical, sanitary and storage spaces are organized in a single, multi-story piece of furniture. This cupboard runs along the side wall, its width varying from the width of a kitchen element, to the size of a compact bathroom, ending in a sliding door which gives access to a small office space. The mezzanine level of the structure, accessible with a moveable ladder, houses storage cupboards, and a small platform used as a guest bedroom.

Duisburg, BE / 2010-2013
In collaboration with Jan de Moffarts
This house is set on a hilly terrain in Duisburg, a community in the agricultural outskirts of Brussels. The traditional gable roof, an urbanistic requirement for this area, usually creates rather introverted volumes. In this project it was inverted and turned, re-defining its qualities. With the highest points at the volumes' corners and the lowest in the centre, the house opens up to the surrounding landscape. Combined with the sloping terrain, this creates a double high living space on the garden side, and a split-level with mansarde bedroom on the street. Both inside and out, the roof is the protagonist. Constructed as a series of straight beams set at different angles, it creates a curved and ever-changing surface. Under this untreated wood surface, the interior organisation is designed as a continuous spatial experience, with all main spaces laid out in a door-less spiral pattern around a central core, ending in a ladder to a rooftop terrace. The built-in furniture further enhances the interior's continuity, creating functional 'rooms' under the roof's surface while allowing for diagonal see-throughs.

Project for the European architecture competition 'Flow: the Brussels canal zone', Honorable Mention, 2009. With Joris De Baes, Annaik Deceuninck, Michael Langeder, Dries Lips, Dieter Van Acker, Alexander Vanysacker and Bart Verstappen.

"I stood still for some little time, examining it on all sides. I questioned it without stopping at an answer... I could not determine wheter this singular object were the work of life, or of art, or rather of time - and so a freak nature... then suddenly I flung it back into the sea."

(Eupalinos or the Architect, Paul Valery)

Brussels’ global perception is very different from its local reality. As the European capital, it is a junction of endless flows. At the same time it is a daily habitat for a million people. Its central position in Europe’s most densely developed area and its imprisonment within its own ring road, demands the presence of a certain mass and density. Exchanging old harbor areas for residential or commercial zones and moving the harbor further away from the city - common practice in old cities during the last decade - is not an option in Brussels. The harbor of Brussels needs every square meter inside the ring. Generating more qualitative living space can only happen by reinterpreting the same surface of malfunctioning existing fabric.

Our attention is drawn to a one kilometer gap that slashes right through the urban tissue and tears the city in two: the Brussels centre canal area. This backbone for the harbour and its numerous industries is bordered by inefficient infrastructure rendering its banks to an intensely gray and cheerless place. A place the city has turned his back to, meaning it has also turned its back to the other side. The canal neither has the chance to unfold itself as a green artery to the city, nor does it bare the potential to be an efficient mode of connection between both sides of the city or between the city and beyond. But a higher bridge density along the pentagon already holds the promise of a real connection. The relative narrowness of the canalzone, its vicinity to the city and its overload of cars could actually make it become one of the most intense and surprising areas of Brussels. It is borderline and central area at the same time.

Platform, 2.5 meters above the canal, is&#38;nbsp; a place of exceptional possibilities. An endless sequence of connecting bridges melts in to one and closes the gap. It is connected to the ground level by a loose collection of stairs, ramps, elevators and escalators, reminiscent of an old Europe, which make it accessible to all users. The existing car traffic is led underground, to the level of the canal, rendering it into a layer of pure infrastructure. The platform disguises the canal, making it ever more present. Like a pier, its infinite setup connects the city and the canal as a whole.

&#60;img width="900" height="600" width_o="900" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7bcef122e640df9c0483ce020cb0d8daa279b4bce5ec5cc230f8bcf8b4b3fc40/6_platform0000layer-2.jpg" data-mid="36277223" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/900/i/7bcef122e640df9c0483ce020cb0d8daa279b4bce5ec5cc230f8bcf8b4b3fc40/6_platform0000layer-2.jpg" /&#62;

As an addition to the Platform and to create a continuous sufficient air draught, we propose a series of new bridges, based on a known typology. The Buda bridge has proven most effective for the canal over the last decades. As a drawbridge it can adapt very fast to the needs of both the city and the canal. A series of Buda bridges provides a flexible air draught and marks the canal with a series of identical shapes, rendering it more visible than it has ever been. Two of these Buda-bridges intersect with the Platform. The shifting positions of the bridges alternately create passages and podiums. Their enigmatic shapes serve as frames, to be filled in by the users.

The platform reinforces the emptiness in its ultimate potentiality. In a growing city like Brussels, with a lack of open space, it gives a podium to the people, but also a grandstand to the city. It becomes a place for the largest of events, as well as the most trivial. Having lunch or taking a dip as well as protests, music events or manifestations. Platform is a local intervention of a European scale: an Acropolis for Brussels.

Project for the international architecture competition 'Sudapan: Endless(s)trips' Mexico, 2008. Honorable Mention. With Annaik Deceuninck, Annelies Van Hauwe, Dieter Van Acker, Alexander Vanysacker and Bert Rogiers.

Modern tourism steers away from the characteristic concentration of giant hotel blocks and overcrowded beaches. Tourists seek for a more exclusive experience in a ‘natural environment’, detached from local reality . These ‘fantasy islands’ seem deserted at first sight but are in fact highly controlled. Vacant space is an inevitable condition to keep up the illusion, nature acts as a background for luxurious entertainment. Unintentionally, resort tourism coincides with nature preservation.
In the Riviera Maya, the hotel-resorts generate their own latent cities, which provide supplies and staff. However, if not well balanced this initially 'self-regulating system' becomes it's own worst enemy. A growing city could destroy the 'natural', anti-urban environment required by the resort. City and resort form an unwilling symbiosis, possible of rendering each other impossible.

To maximize both parties’ growth and development, the economical logic must be extended. The tourist should not be distracted by local influences. And withdrawal from tourist scenery stimulates the city's autonomy. In combination with the distinct geography, this specific social system carries a unique potential: a functioning linear city.&#38;nbsp;

&#60;img width="900" height="650" width_o="900" height_o="650" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/534fbd3a09020f24e50c2fe8e73a4bf1a2ca5db9353b8e7aaf1666a261848fad/7_sudapan0003layer-2.jpg" data-mid="36276701" border="0" data-no-zoom src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/900/i/534fbd3a09020f24e50c2fe8e73a4bf1a2ca5db9353b8e7aaf1666a261848fad/7_sudapan0003layer-2.jpg" /&#62;

(Excerpt from the project text)
The highway, which now separates beach resorts and urban developments, is reinforced. A monumental, multifunctional wall-building shields the resort from the growing city it generates. To the resident, it is the linear centre of a young city; housing schools, hospitals, cultural and administrational facilities inside its crisp, marble walls.&#38;nbsp; The city can finally liberate itself from its creator and define its own identity. From a withdrawn elevated coastline, citizens can overview their revenues. The building's down flowing shape makes a connection with the existing urban fabrics while vaguely reminding it of authentic local culture.

To the tourist, the wall-building&#38;nbsp; forms an endless mirror, doubling its idyllic setting. Every reference to an outside reality is banned. He feels as though he’s on a deserted island, surrounded by nature and detached from every day life, not aware that thousands of others are having the same exclusive experience at the same time. At night, the rooms behind the mirror light up. Casinos and clubs seemingly appear out of nowhere, flames attracting tourists like moths. The morning after, &#38;nbsp;both tourists and citizens each go back to their side of the line, to the illusion of total independence.</description>

This large series of photographs — more then 400 in total — is a room-to-room exploration of the Brussels World Trade Centre WTC complex, a year before its planned dismantling and reconstruction. Maintaining a neutral camera angle, the project documents the various added and peeled-off layers of decay, fleeting temporary use and fragmentation. As an index of building fragments and found relics of past users, it’s a visual testament of a complex urban structure which has been in more or less constant transformation since its conception.
Produced for Jan de Moffarts Architects. June — September 2018.

Exhibition held at Renold Temporary Gallery &#38;amp; Performance Space, Brussels, from July 12 – 18, 2014
Curated by Michael Langeder and Thaïs De Roquemaurel

“Steven Bosmans’ pictures carry an eerie sense of alienation. The photos were shot during his travels in three different continents. However the actual location of the views is irrelevant. The landscapes depicted are man-made — still lifes of our relation with nature and the world that’s surrounding us. The images direct the viewer’s gaze to our own existence, and our perception of what seems natural. ‘Here’ again becomes somewhere else.” (Michael Langeder)
